In the meantime look at individuals and families we have helped find a new home.
“It ain't right her sleeping downstairs and me upstairs, we want to be together.
We’ve been married for 40 years,” says Tom about his wife Alice. She had been sleeping downstairs for the last 12 months, riddled with arthritis, unable to make her way up the stairs. They never dreamed their home would be a trap to their health needs. “There comes a time when you need to make big decisions, and when the chance to move to a bungalow came up we wanted to have a look.”
Alice was finding it increasingly difficult to wash, as they only had downstairs facilities. They moved 6 months ago to an adapted bungalow in Brownhills nearer to their daughter.
The ‘39 Steps’ is not a film or spy novel for Trisha and her two kids, it was the number of steps up to their private rented flat. Trisha like many single mums struggles to make ends meet, but what makes her life doubly difficult is having one disabled son and a double buggy with her 5 month old daughter to manage too. Richie has no garden to play in, being in a first floor flat, and he is totally reliant on his mum getting him up the stairs, along with his sister. “It was doing my head in and my back as well,” says Trisha “I was worried I would drop my boy, getting down the stairs, which are steep and hard concrete, and treacherous in the wet.”
"There are no more steps. There is a ramp and a new ground floor flat with a reputable housing agency that has put this right. I’ve had some new curtains off my nana, a shower instead of a bath, to cap it all a smile from my Richie -it is seven steps to heaven, not 39 to hell.”
